When I was 19 I lived in NYC, studying dance with Alwin Nikolai and Murray Louis, working at Burger King in Times Square and finding solace at the NYC Library.
I spent most of my time in the children and young adult’s section. As the librarian got to know me, she realized – long before I did, that I was intelligent and capable of more challenging books. She asked me how old I was – I looked 13, then promptly took me to the adult section. My world forever changed. Wandering throughout the library the endless possibilities of my life opened up.
These “institutions” became my odyssey of study, and as some keep diplomas on their walls, I hold on to my Library Cards with gratitude.
Forty years later, I now have 14 Library Cards.
